Nokia Sees 10% Drop in 2009 Mobile Phone Sales

Following in the footsteps of LG and Sony Ericsson, Nokia today reported a poor performance for the fourth quarter of 2008, for which it blamed the global economic downturn. Handset sales during the latest three-month period were 113.1 million, down 15.3 percent from the fourth quarter of 2007 and 4 percent lower than third-quarter 2008 sales of 117.8 million units. Nokia also lost 1 percent market share during the quarter. And not only did they sell fewer phones, they sold them cheaply; Nokia’s average selling price for a handset declined to 71 euros from 83 euros.

But forget all that, for the worst is yet to come. Nokia is forecasting a 10 percent decline in global handset sales — not just for the company but for the entire industry. a living by selling to the mobile industry, especially chipmakers like Texas Instruments.

Nokia had previously forecast a 5 percent decline in sales, so things are clearly a lot worse than anyone thought. Sales are going to be swimming with the fishes for the first half of the year, Nokia indicates, though things might get marginally better in the second half of 2009.

Nokia launches iPhone rival

People queued through the night to be first to get their hands on the Nokia 5800 - the brand's first touch screen phone which is set to rival Apple's iPhone.
The phone, which has built-in surround sound speakers, went on sale at flagship stores in London's Regent Street and Heathrow Terminal Five.
Britain's Got Talent winner George Sampson entertained people who were so keen to be the first in the UK to use the phone that some queued through the night in Regent Street.
George, 15, danced a specially choreographed routine on a floor which lit up as he stepped across it, echoing the 5800's touch screen technology.
The first 100 people to buy the new "big sound" phone also received tickets for the Benicassim music festival in Spain.
A Nokia spokeswoman said the phone was aimed at technology savvy music lovers aged 16 to 30.
The Nokia 5800, which has a recommended retail price of £249, goes on sale nationwide on January 30.

Sony Ericsson W595

Features
One big upgrade is the camera, which has jumped from 2 megapixels to an impressive 3.2 megapixels. It still lacks a flash, mind, so you can rule out good-looking photos under strobe or moonlight. If photos are key, consider a Nokia N82

A 2GB proprietary Sony Memory Stick Micro card comes in the box, and M2 cards of up to 8GB were supported in our tests. Sadly it's inaccessible inside the handset, so you'll have to whip out the battery to get to it.

Accessing media on these cards requires a simple touch of a dedicated Walkman button, thrusting you into a clean media manager interface for browsing multimedia, Flash games and RSS feeds. They're intuitively laid out and fun to browse -- plus, a built-in accelerometer automatically rotates pictures and videos depending on whether you hold the phone horizontally or vertically.

Supported music formats include MP3, AAC, WMA and WAV. Protected WMA files were supported in our tests as long as they were purchased (not subscribed to), but we had trouble playing any Napster To Go downloads.

Nokia 5800 XpressMusic

Features
It's obvious that we weren't enamoured with the 5800's design, but its features did get our hearts racing. It lives up to its XpressMusic title by offering a usable music player that displays album art and lets you search through tracks using a search bar, or by flicking your finger up and down the screen through a list of tracks.

You can download music straight to the 5800 via the Nokia Music Store, which we found easy enough to do and, best of all, you can listen to all your music using normal headphones, plugged straight in. The 5800 also comes with a useful, in-wire remote that you can use to control your music when the phone is in your pocket.

Wi-Fi and HSDPA make Web access satisfactory, and the 5800's browser performs well enough, displaying full-sized Web pages and giving you the option to zoom in and out of them and swipe the screen to move around. It's not as impressive as the iPhone's browser, but it works well enough for accessing Facebook, for example.

Built-in GPS means you can use the 5800 as a sat-nav in conjunction with Nokia Maps or Google Maps, which both worked well. Combined with the 5800's large screen, this offers one of the best navigating experiences to date on a Nokia phone. As expected, the GPS works best outdoors, with a clear line of sight to the sky

BEST MOBILE GAMES

If the bubbles are happy, then the player is happy too

Happy Lines Review
Some of the most addictive games are usually based on a simple concept, but require a great amount of logic from the player. That's just what Happy Lines does. It teases your mind and gets you addicted on winning until you just can't seem to have enough. And then you find yourself playing until the mobile phone's battery discharges just to advance one more level.HeroCraft seems to have successfully found a way to put the best in this game, starting with the concept and down to performances. Happy Line asks very simple things from the player. It gives him a blank grid with three marbles to start with. You have to move a marble's position as to make a row of 5 of the same color or a square, depending on the level. There are 40 levels and each of them features slight differences. In some cases, you might have to accomplish a certain amount of points while in others you will have to work against the clock and make several successful moves as to win yourself even more time.

Pro Evolution Soccer 2009

The Pro Evo vs FIFA war has raged across many consoles over the past decade, and last year was the first time that Konami rallied their mobile troops. Now they're back again, with Pro Evolution Soccer 2009 taking its place on handsets across the world. To anyone who previously played Pro Evolution Soccer 2008 on mobiles, the 2009 edition should be fairly recognisable and equally easy to get to grips with, as from a game-play point of view, very little has changed. As before, you have a choice of control systems, with the ability to control all your shooting, passing and tackling using a single button, or spreading them around the keys. While the one button system might be more convenient for some players, matches seem to flow far better if you choose the standard layout, which maps pass and shoot to 5 and 0 respectively, with through balls assigned to Star/Hash. Of course, if your phone has a d-pad with an action button in the middle of it, rather than a joystick, it might be a different story.

The Fast and the Furious: Pink Slip Review

There is a new Fast and Furious movie hitting theaters next year. To get players amped up for the movie, the developers at Firemint have recently released an iPhone game entitled Fast and Furious Pink Slip. Players will get sucked back into the world of the Fast and Furious (as in the world of underground racing). As the name suggests, in each race players will have to put their cars on the line in order to obtain new levels and cars.
Once players load the game for the first time, they will have several options available to them: quick race, arcade, and multiplayer. In quick race, players are given a randomly selected race mode and a car to practice without messing up their progress score in arcade. Once players load arcade, they will have several options available to them. However, they are stuck starting off at the rookie level. There are several races they can compete in such as standard race, drifting, drag, and cop chase. Standard race players are just trying to get to the finish line as fast as possible. Drift it is about making sure players make all the correct turns at a safe speed. In other words, in Drift mode, top speed will not guarantee a winner. Scores are dependent on the style of how players drift while gaining as many points as possible. Within drag mode, it is necessary for players to hit the gear shifts at the right time in order to win. Drag mode can be tedious because there is always a worry you may stall out. The last mode is cop chase where, of course, the police are chasing defiant players trying to get away with whatever misdemeanor the player has caused.
The object is to win more races, which will unlock more levels and more cars. The only caveat is that players have to beat each race, as they have to put the car's pink slip on the line. If players win the race they will obtain a car; if they lose, they will lose their car. So players will always have to keep in mind which type of race they are in, the level they are playing, and the attributes of the car they are using versus the car they are completing against. This adds a nice bit of strategy to the game.

Nokia N82

I've been giving some serious thought to which phone I should buy next. I've not been using Nseries for a while, I've been off using handsets from Sony Ericsson and Samsung, fine handsets in their own right, I guess, but not for me.Recently I've been using an E51, which is a great handset, but I was getting itchy for something new. As it turns out, my choice is anything but.
I was thinking of going retro, with either the N80 or the N73, but although the appeal was there, I decided it wasn't worth it.
I left myself with a choice between the N82, or getting one of the really nice Eseries phones, either the E66 or E71.
The E71 is a fantastic handset, a friend recently nominated it his 'handset of the year'. One of the major pluses of the E71 is the reported battery times. It has always been one of the important points for me, on any phone, is the quality of the battery. But finally, with this phone, I am just not sure the QWERTY keypad is for me. Very fickle I know, but sometimes it comes down to the minor points when choosing a phone.
The E66 is a good alternative to the E71, with a more standard form factor. Reviews are quite harsh when commenting on the battery life with this phone, but it is still overall a fine looking handset, with plenty to offer. The build quality on the E66 and E71 also feels top drawer, really solid and feel like they are built to last.
Thing is, after a lot of thought and some useful suggestions in the comments a few posts back, I decided the phone I'm gonna stick with is the N82. I picked one up the other day to use whilst deciding what phone to get, and I guess that has influenced me.
Ever since the first day I used the N82 I have been impressed with its all-round feature set. Quality in all areas, camera, GPS, Web, Email, acceptable size, with an acceptable battery life too. The keypad can become frustrating, especially when composing long emails, but that is not enough to detract from the quality of the phone.I had looked at newer Nseries phones, like the N96, but I am not liking that phone.
Too buggy, (Yeah, I know I can update when new firmware releases, but still, poor showing from Nokia with that phone) and the build quality is just so cheap and plastic.
The Eseries phones are streets ahead in this regard. So, N82 it is. But I honestly feel with the better media features now on Eseries phones, and a superior build quality, active standby screen plugins, etc, my next purchase may be Eseries.
